What Are Dental Crowns and How Are They Used?

In this video, Dr. Gloria Stingley explains when a crown is necessary and how it helps protect weakened teeth from further damage.

Dental crowns are used when a restoration is too large and has weakened the walls of the tooth. As the patient chews, the weakened tooth structure can fracture, eventually leaving little to no natural tooth remaining. A crown is used to cover the entire tooth and evenly distribute chewing forces across it.

There are clear indications for crowns. When one-half to two-thirds of a tooth is missing, a crown is recommended. Additionally, any time a root canal is performed, a crown is necessary because a root canal–treated tooth becomes brittle and is more susceptible to fracture without full coverage.

If you or someone you love is struggling with missing or damaged teeth, contact Carter-Rockbridge General Dentistry for a free screening to learn how our dental crowns can enhance your smile, improve your function, and restore your self-confidence.

Over the next few days, white blood cells migrate to the injury site. These cells clean out bacteria, paving the way for new tissue to [...]

Cavities form when the acids in your mouth erode your tooth’s protective enamel, forming a hole in the surface of the tooth.
