When you’re ready to invest in dental implants, a crucial part of success is knowing how to care for them once they’re placed. That means giving the site time to heal and eating the right foods to avoid irritating it.  As a Norcross implant dentist, Dr. Gloria Stingley is passionate about educating patients to help them get optimal results. She wants to be part of your team and help guide you through the process so you can enjoy a healthy implant-supported restoration!

Here’s a guide to what to expect during healing and recovery after dental implants.

Healing After Dental Implants: What To Expect

Norcoss Implant Dentist | Recovery & Aftercare [Video Explainer]The healing process after dental implant placement can vary from person to person. It depends on the implant type, your overall health, and the extent of your treatment. Conventional dental implants typically require a longer recovery period than minimally invasive mini dental implants. So patients can return to their normal routines sooner with mini implants than with conventional dental implants.

If Dr. Stingley places an implant the same day as an extraction, the extraction site will also need time to heal.

Some patients may feel close to normal within a few weeks. However, feeling better does not mean the bone has fully healed. The implant generally needs several months to osseointegrate, or bond with the surrounding bone. Osseointegration can take anywhere from four to six months, but everyone is different. Dr. Stingley can explain how long it might take based on your situation in a personalized consultation.

If a mini dental implant is sufficiently stable when it is placed, some patients may receive a replacement tooth right away. This does not mean the implant is fully healed or ready for unrestricted chewing. Dr. Stingley will explain when and how you can use it while the area heals.

An infection or bone loss around the tooth’s root can also affect your treatment and recovery. Dr. Stingley will tailor your aftercare instructions and any prescribed medications to your needs.

We also provide post-op medication when appropriate to help manage discomfort or address other needs after the procedure.

Norcross Implant Dentist Explains What You Can Eat After Dental Implants

If you’ve been living without teeth for a long time, it’s natural to wonder what you can eat and how soon you can return to your usual diet.

Your eating restrictions depend on where the implant is placed, whether you have a replacement tooth attached, and how the area is healing. Start with soft foods if Dr. Stingley recommends them, and follow her instructions before returning to your usual diet.

If the implant is placed in the anterior region, or the front of the mouth, avoid biting directly into food with that area while it heals. Cut food into small pieces so you don’t need to bite or tear it with your front teeth.

If an implant is in the posterior region, or the back of the mouth, and a replacement tooth is attached, Dr. Stingley adjusts how that tooth meets the opposing teeth to limit pressure when you bite down. Even so, a replacement tooth doesn’t mean you can return to unrestricted chewing right away. Follow her guidance on soft foods and when to introduce firmer foods.

The Importance of Follow-Up Visits

Follow-up visits give Dr. Stingley an opportunity to evaluate healing and check the implant’s stability. Even if everything around the implant looks normal, these follow-up visits give Dr. Stingley a chance to make sure you’re maintaining good oral hygiene. They are also a good time to discuss your diet or any concerns about your replacement teeth. If you develop bleeding that will not stop, a fever, or pain that prescribed medication does not relieve, contact the office promptly rather than waiting for your next visit.
