What Is a Mini Dental Implant?
In this video, Dr. Gloria Stingley explains how mini dental implants differ from traditional implants and when they may be used.
A mini dental implant is less invasive because it requires only a small punch through the gingiva and into the bone. The implant can be placed with minimal discomfort, and once it is placed, it is stable and can be restored. In contrast, a standard implant is larger and requires more tissue manipulation, which results in a longer healing time. Normally, when a standard implant is placed, it remains in the mouth for four to six months before the patient returns for restoration. With a mini implant, restoration can often be completed the same day.
The cost of mini implants is significantly lower than that of standard implants because standard implants require additional components. A standard implant consists of three parts, whereas a mini implant is a single-piece system.
